Specializing in:
For five consecutive days, a Hartford Stage teaching artist visits the classroom to lead drama activities based on a work of
literature chosen by the school. The students do not read the book prior to the residency, but rather explore central themes
found in the literature through techniques such as improvisation, role-play, tableau, pantomime and text analysis.
Through the course of the week, the students develop a sense of empathy for the characters in the literature, so that by the end of he residency they cannot wait to read the book! This approach engages all students as participants and audience members,
encouraging them to try many roles and perspectives within a dramatic context.
Reflection, discussion and assessment are integral to the process. Your students reinforce interpersonal skills as they
work as an ensemble and strengthen intrapersonal skills as they consider character motivations, behavior and consequences
within the literature. The dramatic explorations challenge students to comprehend, interpret, and evaluate their work — all skills vital for CONNECTICUT MASTERY TESTS.
